Selling Tips

Planning

Saturday Morning is the best day.  Start early 6.30-7am.

Place an ad in your local paper a week beforehand.

Don’t hold your garage sale on public holiday weekends or just before and after Christmas.

If possible, hold your garage sale on a day when the weather is good - check the forecast.

Preparation

Think about what and where to have your sale e.g Garage, Carport, lawn.

Sort out all the items going in the Sale during the week. Make sure it's clean.

Have your Garage Sale Signs Ready to put up Saturday Morning just before start time. The closest main road is good directing traffic to your Street. Make sure you have good signs.

When making your signs, include the words “Garage Sale”, the date and day it’s on, the times it’ll run between, and your address. Then put a great big arrow on it pointing the way to your house

Clear the area. Cover valuable belongings and any items not in the Garage Sale.

Have some pricing tickets and stickers. Price as many items as possible or have an itemised list so you're ready for the rush.

Have an electrical outlet or extension cord ready so people can try out any electrical goods e.g TV or a stereo why not have it playing?

Have some plastic bags available to put sold items in. Newspaper can be good for wrapping breakable goods.

Have at least $100 in change on you in small bills and coins and keep money on your person or hidden.

Tie your pets up or put them in a safe place while your garage sale is in progress.

Successful Sales

Start Early

Setting out your items attractively

Price items to sell. Remember your objective is to sell. Be realistic with your pricing and you’re sure to have a successful garage sale.

In the last hour consider bagging small items like toys, clothing, ornaments, bric a brac into lots and selling them that way instead of individually. You won’t get left with the rubbish and you’ll make more money.

Make sure you have fun.
